This picture depicts how a caterpillar grows into a butterfly and could be used in an elementary school science lesson. The image is simple and easy to understand if the teacher provides a few details about what is happening to the caterpillar/butterfly. The lesson could also accompany having a real live caterpillar go through pupation in the classroom. My 1st grade teacher did this and it was so much fun to be able to see the pupation's progression when we came into school everyday and finally release the butterflies when they emerged.
